Septic and Sewer Work for Carthage Homes and Properties

Septic services in Carthage, TN start with one question: is the house on the town sewer or a septic tank? Homes on the town sewer drain to lines that the Town of Carthage maintains itself. Out in Smith County's rolling hills, a home off the sewer runs on its own tank and drain field. When a drain backs up, that answer tells us where to start.

We are Wiley Rooter and Septic Pros, a septic and sewer contractor based in Greenbrier, in Robertson County. We bring septic tank pumping, repairs, drain fields and new tanks out to Carthage. The company brings 20 years of septic and sewer experience, and we are licensed, insured and bonded. Estimates are free, so call or text (629) 285-6381.

Septic and Sewer Service in Carthage and South Carthage

Carthage is the county seat of Smith County. The 2020 Census counted 2,291 people in the town and 19,904 in the county. The town sits amid low hills where the Caney Fork meets the Cumberland River. That spot once made it an important shipping and steamboat port, with goods sent downstream to Nashville.

South Carthage is a separate town on the opposite bank of the Cumberland, with 1,490 people in the 2020 Census. It runs along the south bank from Goodall Island east to the mouth of the Caney Fork. Two bridges link the towns: the Cordell Hull Bridge on the west and the Veterans Memorial Bridge on the east. State Route 25 crosses the river on the Veterans Memorial Bridge.

U.S. Route 70N runs through South Carthage, toward Nashville to the west and Cookeville to the east. Its key junction with State Routes 25 and 53 sits inside the town's southeastern limits. From there, State Route 53 heads south to Gordonsville and Interstate 40. We work on both banks, on septic systems and sewer lines alike.

Town Sewer, Drain Cleaning and Sewer Line Repair in Carthage

The Town of Carthage keeps up its own water and sewer lines, with line maintenance under a Water/Sewer Supervisor. The town also runs its own Clean Water Treatment Plant for wastewater. Its fee list charges a customer who damages the sewer cleanout. If the trouble is in the town's main or at that cleanout, call the town.

For a home on the town sewer, our work stays on the house side. Drain cleaning opens clogged drains and main lines. A sewer camera inspection shows roots or a break before anyone digs. Hydro jetting scours grease and buildup off the pipe walls.

When the private line itself is cracked or broken, sewer line repair replaces the bad section. Our crew does its own excavation with a compact track loader and a small excavator. Where a line crosses a road, we saw the asphalt, set the pipe and patch the road.

Septic Systems and Drain Fields Across Rural Smith County

Smith County covers 325 square miles, and the 2020 Census put 100 percent of its residents in rural areas. The county sits between the rugged Highland Rim to the east and the flatter Nashville Basin to the west. It is known for its rolling hills. The Caney Fork and the Cumberland are its main waterways, and they meet at Carthage.

Carthage sits just southwest of Cordell Hull Lake, and Cordell Hull Dam on the Cumberland is close by. Out in the county, from Dixon Springs and Pleasant Shade to Elmwood and Brush Creek, a home past the reach of a sewer line runs on its own septic tank and drain field. Long drives and hilly lots mean we plan how our equipment reaches the tank and the field.

When a field fails or stays soggy, drain field repair rebuilds the gravel and fabric trenches or lays new ones. At the tank, septic repair covers pumps, floats, alarms and control panels, baffles and broken lines. For a new home or a worn-out tank, septic tank installation means a precast concrete tank set by boom truck. Septic tank risers bring buried lids up to ground level.

Smith County Septic Permits and the Cookeville Field Office

Inside town limits, building permits come through the Town of Carthage. The town uses the 2018 International Building, Plumbing, Mechanical and Fire Codes. Septic permits come from the state, and Smith County is served by TDEC's Cookeville Environmental Field Office.

A property owner with a faulty system must get a Septic System Construction Permit for the repair. The repair permit carries no permit fee. Processing can take up to 45 days from a complete application, so start early. The property owner gets the permit, and we install to the approved design.

TDEC asks owners to mow or bush hog the house site before the state's site visit. The areas proposed for the soil evaluation need the same clearing. A TDEC Environmental Scientist then evaluates the site to decide the type of system. The state does a final inspection before a permitted system is covered, then issues a Certificate of Completion.

Buying a home out in the county? The state keeps records for existing systems in its online Search for Septic Tank Permits. A septic inspection then shows how the tank and the field work today. Our guide to how septic permits work in Tennessee covers each step.

Carthage FAQ

Questions From Carthage Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Carthage. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (629) 285-6381

Is my Carthage home on the town sewer or a septic system?
The Town of Carthage runs its own sewer lines and its own Clean Water Treatment Plant. A sewer charge on your utility bill points to the town sewer. No sewer charge and a tank lid or riser in the yard usually means septic. If you are not sure, call or text us the address and we will talk it through.
Who takes care of the sewer main and the cleanout in Carthage?
The Town of Carthage maintains its own water and sewer lines. Its fee list even charges a customer who damages the sewer cleanout. Our work for town sewer homes is on the house side: drains, camera work, jetting and the private line. If the trouble is at the town's main or cleanout, call the town first.
Do you work in South Carthage and Gordonsville?
Yes. South Carthage sits across the Cumberland, linked to Carthage by the Cordell Hull Bridge and the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Gordonsville is south on State Route 53, toward Interstate 40. Both are Smith County towns, so septic permits there come through the state's Cookeville field office too.
Do you come out to Carthage from Greenbrier?
Yes, we come through Gallatin and follow State Route 25 east to Hartsville. From there, the highway passes Dixon Springs and Riddleton on its way into Carthage. State Route 80 runs north into Macon County, where we also serve Lafayette. Call or text (629) 285-6381 with your address for a free estimate.
What does septic work cost in Carthage?
We price each job after we see the system, and the estimate is free. Pumping a tank and replacing a drain field are very different jobs. For market numbers, see our guide to drain field replacement costs in Tennessee. Call or text (629) 285-6381 to set a time.
