White House runs its own sewer system. It covers more than 100 miles of collection pipe and over 40 pump stations. The city brought a new treatment plant online in 2024, rated at 2 million gallons a day. Even so, the city reports that about half of its properties are connected.
Sewer connections in town use a grinder pump or a vacuum valve pit. The city maintains most of that equipment. A septic property works nothing like that. The tank, the lines and the field all belong to the owner.
Sewer service does not follow the city limits in a neat line. Some subdivisions are on it and some are not. Plenty of homes just outside town were never near a sewer main. When one of those systems quits, the owner calls a contractor for septic repair.
White House sits on the northern Highland Rim, about 22 miles north of Nashville. I-65 crosses Highway 76 at Exit 108, and US 31W runs through the middle of town. The ground under all of it is limestone and chert with a silty cap. Sinkholes and caves show up across this part of Middle Tennessee.
Soils on the Highland Rim often carry a dense layer called a fragipan, 18 to 36 inches down. Water moves through a fragipan slowly. That is the same depth a drain field trench sits at. Effluent can pool there instead of soaking away.
Wet winters and springs make it worse. A field that handles August fine can surface in February. Spongy grass and standing water over the trenches are the signs to watch. Whether the fault sits in the tank or the field decides how big the job gets.

A new system or a field replacement starts with soil work by an approved soil consultant. A construction permit follows, and the installer has to hold a state license. Homes on the city system still own the line from the house to the connection. Old clay and cast iron pipe cracks, bellies and takes on roots. A camera run finds the bad spot before anyone digs.
When a line has to be replaced under a street, the city issues a road cut permit. Our crew does its own excavation, saws the asphalt, sets the line and patches the road back. That keeps sewer line replacement with the same company from the first cut to the finished patch.
On septic homes a slow drain can be a tank problem. A full tank pushes back into the house lines, and the drain is only the symptom. We check the tank before we run a cable through the line.
